Iran talks aim to save nuclear deal after U.S. pullout

From the moment President Donald Trump pulled the USA out of the Iran Nuclear deal, a.k.a.

Foreign ministers from Britain, China, France, Germany and Russian Federation meet with their Iranian counterpart in Vienna for the first time since Trump left the pact, but diplomats see limited scope for salvaging it.

Germany's foreign minister said on Friday world powers would not be able to fully compensate for companies leaving Iran due to new USA sanctions, but warned Tehran that abandoning its nuclear deal would cause more harm to its economy.

In another telephone conversation with his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron on Thursday, Rouhani also underlined the need to meet the demands of the Islamic republic by the parties to JCOPA. Washington has since told countries they must stop buying the Opec producer's oil from November 4 or face financial consequences.

LONDON - Europe's package of economic measures to offset the U.S. pullout from the nuclear deal is "disappointing", Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told German Chancellor Angela Merkel by telephone on Thursday.

Their foreign ministers were holding talks in Vienna, where the accord was signed in 2015 with the aim of stopping Iran from building the atomic bomb in return for sanctions relief that promised greater trade and investment for the country.

And Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said the meeting would "send a united and determined signal" to the world that the other parties "will continue to respect the agreement".

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas admitted that the situation is hard, and the European Union wants to make it clear to Iran that it has economic benefits from that deal, and it's looking for measures to benefit Tehran under the deal.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas conceded that "we won't be able to compensate for all the effects of enterprises withdrawing from Iran because they see their American business interests threatened by the sanctions".

"We advise businesses that want to keep investing (in Iran), we want to keep payment systems open, and we want to build security through widening the mandate of the European Investment Bank", he said.

However, U.S. President Donald Trump decided on May 8 to quit the nuclear deal and vowed to re-impose sanctions, including oil embargo, on Tehran.

What Iran expects from other signatories to the accord is to consider Iranians' nuclear, political and economic rights addressed in the deal, Zarif told reporters ahead of the meeting. The rial currency has fallen, prices have risen and the country has been hit by street protests and strikes. The demands have been rejected by Iran.

Six people were arrested in Belgium, France and Germany, while the opposition group blamed the Iranian regime for the alleged plot.
