England open the score against Colombia

FIFA World Cup 2018: 'England can beat anyone' – Dele Alli

Regulation ended 1-1 as Colombia canceled out a Harry Kane penalty-kick goal late in the match, and neither could find the victor in extra time.

A long run of penalty misery on soccer's biggest stage ended with a 4-3 shootout victory over Colombia, sending England to the quarterfinals for the first time in 12 years.

A win against Colombia would leave England among as the favourites to reach the final from their side of the bracket, and the Three Lions' all-time leading goal scorer said the young squad have the ability to take the game to the South Americans.

Colombia grew in stature during the first half of extra-time with Falcao heading wide from Mojica's cross, but England found a second wind as Danny Rose dragged a shot wide before Dier headed over when unmarked.

Talking about Pope's ability, an England insider told the newspaper, "He has looked good in training".

But, if Colombia are to have any chance of beating England and making it to the Quarter-Final, it will be up to Davinson Sanchez to utilise the information gained from Premier League football.

Yerry Mina's header in the third minute of stoppage time for Colombia made it 1-1 at the end of regulation, and extra time was scoreless.

The last England player to be fouled more often in a World Cup match than Harry Kane in this match (9) was Alan Shearer in 1998 against Tunisia (11).

The Argentine praised England, saying they were favourites and had the advantage of having rested many players in their final group match as they had already secured their knockout spot early. Thus, he is likely to miss the match against England which will turn out to be a huge blow for Colombia. They were threatening but couldn't crack David Ospina.

Tite's Brazil eased to a 2-0 win over Mexico on Monday and are still the favourites to win the World Cup with the bookies.

At full-time, Colombia had committed significantly more fouls - 21 to to England's 13 - while England marginally stayed on top of possession, 52% to 48%.

England will next play Sweden in the quarter-finals on Saturday. But even with the atmosphere similar to an away game, England started strongly.

England were the better side without looking too unsafe but were then gifted the lead when Carlos Sanchez hauled down England's captain and talisman Kane once too often.

England captain Harry Kane had given his side a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute with a well-taken penalty.

Kane's strike also sees the 24-year-old match Lionel Messi's total record of World Cup goals, on his debut at the tournament.

While the English may already be planning their World Cup celebrations, Pekerman and his side will be thinking otherwise and they certainly posses enough quality to book date with either Sweden or Switzerland in the last eight of Russian Federation 2018.
