Carr Fire, Cranston Fire Rapidly Moving Through Calif.

Deadly Calif. wildfire 'taking down everything in its path,' spawning 'firenadoes'SHARE:sharetweetshareemail

"This fire is extremely unsafe and is moving with no regard to what's on its path", Cal Fire Incident Commander Chief Brett Gouvea told reporters. That is well above average for the same period over the past 10 years but down from 5.27 million acres (2.13 million hectares) burned in the first seven months of 2017, the National Interagency Fire Center reported. Mike Daly filmed his drive on Friday morning. By Friday morning, it had more than doubled in size, spreading across an area the size of the District of Columbia.

The blaze that erupted Wednesday afternoon near the San Bernardino National Forest quickly grew to 7 ½ square miles (19 square kilometers) and fire officials say it threatens about 600 homes. The blaze is "taking everything down in its path", and the situation on the scene is "very dynamic" and "a heck of a fight", Scott McLean, a spokesman for the crews battling the Carr Fire, told The Associated Press.

A firefighter works to battle the Carr Fire at a home in Redding, Calif., on Thursday.

Cal Fire said the Cranston Fire, about 110 miles (177 km) east of Los Angeles had blackened 11,500 acres (4,650 hectares) and was just 3 percent contained.

The fire exploded overnight, destroying dozens of homes. Conditions are calm but gusty winds are expected by afternoon.

"It is extreme fire behavior - and dramatic - just like you would see in the Hollywood movies, if you will", said Belongie. It was sparked by a mechanical issue involving a vehicle, Cal Fire said.

At least two of these personnel were killed, authorities said.

An explosive wildfire in Northern California has burned dozens of homes, injured firefighters and civilians, and reached the city of Redding. Pending notification of next of kin, they have not released the person's name, only that the firefighter worked for the Redding Fire Department. "The fire community is extremely heartbroken for this loss". Marin County reported that three of its firefighters working on defending structures were burned on their ears, face and hands by a sudden blast of heat.

The heart of Yosemite National Park remained empty the day after campers and hotel guests were evicted so firefighters could try to keep the state's largest fire from entering the park almost two weeks after it was sparked.

Firefighters have been struggling to contain the so-called Ferguson Fire, which has raged near the 768,000-acre park since last week, shrouding the Half Dome and El Capitan peaks in smoke. Over the past two decades the fire seasons has become longer, stretching from May to November or December.

"Really, we're in a life-saving mode right now in Redding", said Jonathan Cox, battalion chief with Cal Fire.

Evacuation orders expanded by the hour on Thursday night as an evacuation center opened at an area high school, which was later closed and moved to Shasta College.

She added, "There was just no messing around".

"And that was when I thought, 'I'm not going to wait, '" Ing said. "It doesn't sound good".

This year so far, nearly 4 million acres (1.6 million hectares) have been blackened by wildfires, above a 10-year average of 3.6 million acres (1.5 million hectares) over the same period, according to the National Interagency Fire Center.

Journalists covering the fire also had to respond to the blaze. "Reports on KRCR-TV, the ABC affiliate in Redding, confirm parts of the city are without power in an effort to prevent electrical equipment from sparking more fires".
