CVD are responsible for 44% of all NCD deaths, or 17.9 million deaths annually in the world, including 2 million deaths in the Americas.

This year's theme: "Tobacco and heart disease", focuses on tobacco use as a key risk factor for developing heart and related diseases, including stroke. She added that by taking a robust control measure on tobacco, governments can safeguard their countries future by protecting tobacco users and non-users from these deadly products, generating revenues to fund health and other social services, and saving their environments from the ravages of tobacco, the only legal product that maims and kills.

This was contained in a statement issued by WHO regional director for Africa, Dr. Matshidiso Moeti, in a speech to mark the 2018 World No Tobacco Day on Thursday in Abuja. More than 100 million of those live in India. On this month's World No Tobacco Day, most will have no option but to continue smoking cigarettes.

To stop the diseases caused by tobacco use, let us make every day a "World No Tobacco Day".

Mosli also points out that smoking is one of the leading causes pf premature death, with around 3,000 Albertans killed every year because of smoking-related illnesses. He also reminded that all must reaffirm the commitment to reduce this menace. The concept of tobacco harm reduction remains a top agenda of the industry and has been vigorously explored. The Region of the Americas is the only exception; the current projections indicate that the target will be reached by 2025.

Smokeless tobacco: around 6.5 per cent of the global population aged 15 and over use smokeless tobacco (8.4 per cent males and 4.6 per cent females).

"Although often associated with ill-health, disability and death from non-communicable chronic diseases, tobacco smoking is also associated with an increased risk of death from communicable diseases".

Beijing and Hebei province will work together on tobacco control promotion and education, standardize tobacco-free environmental construction, enhance the supervisory system and law enforcement and provide more convenient quit-smoking services, Duan said.

Sierra Leone is a party to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco (FCTC), which aims to help countries tackle tobacco's negative impact on development. "This is why it is so important that countries accelerate the implementation of the FCTC".

As per a recent study backed by World Health Organisation (WHO), it has been revealed that Andhra Pradesh has the highest number of smokers in South India.

"When we started doing this in 1998 a third of our high school kids were cigarette smokers", said McMillan. Due to population growth, the number of smokers in the world has remained relatively stable at around 1.1 billion.

Country response: Over half of all WHO Member States have reduced demand for tobacco, and nearly one in four are likely to meet the 30% reduction target by 2025. Most of the cardiovascular and respiratory diseases and cancer types, including some 80-85% of lung cancer are caused by long-term smoking.

The Strategy is supported by measures introduced through the new Tobacco and Vaping Products Act, which recently received Royal Assent, and through the increased funding for federal action on tobacco that was announced in Budget 2018 - the first significant increase in funding to address tobacco use in almost two decades. "What we want to ensure is that cannabis is treated in the same manner as what tobacco related products would be utilized as well".

A country-by-country analysis warns that "the smoking epidemic is being exported from the rich world to low-income and middle-income countries".
