US withdraws from United Nations human rights body

United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley speaks to reporters at United Nations headquarters. Haley says the U.S. is withdrawing from UN Human Rights Council calling it ‘not worthy of its name

The U.N. Human Rights Council called for an end to the policy, prompting Haley to criticize the worldwide body.

"When the Human Rights Council treats Israel worse than North Korea, Iran, and Syria, it is the Council itself that is foolish and unworthy of its name". The council has adopted more resolutions condemning Israel than any other country on earth, and nothing condemning nearly 90 percent of the world's states.

United Nations rights chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein said Monday "the thought that any state would seek to deter parents by inflicting such abuse on children is unconscionable".

"For our part, the United States will not sit quietly while this body, supposedly dedicated to human rights, continues to damage the cause of human rights", Haley said during her speech past year.

USA withdraws from the UN Human Rights Council: "We take this step because our commitment does not allow us to remain a part of a hypocritical and self-serving organization that makes a mockery of human rights". "In the end, no speech and no structural reforms will save the members of the Human Rights Council from themselves".

Since past year, Haley's office has also pushed the council and its chief not to publish a United Nations database of companies operating in West Bank settlements, a so-called blacklist that Israel is concerned could drive companies away and cast a further pall over its presence in the Palestinian-claimed West Bank.

"The Secretary-General is a strong believer in the human rights architecture of the United Nations and the active participation of all states". The U.S. has also criticized a lack of stringent membership criteria for some countries involved with the council, according to CNN.

The United States has opted to stay out of the Human Rights Council before: The administration of President George W. Bush decided against seeking membership when the council was created in 2006.

The snub of the United Nations' Human Rights Council is a long overdue move by the U.S., but the timing will be less than fortunate. "Human Rights" Council is an oxymoron that does not deserve our respect or support.

Although numerous officials have said repeatedly that "America First does not mean America Alone", the administration has retreated from multiple multilateral accords and consensuses since it took office.

The council reserves one permanent agenda item, governing every one of its regular sessions, only for condemning Israel.

Among reforms the United States had pushed for was to make it easier to kick out member states with egregious rights records. The United States and Australia cast the only "no" votes. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu welcomed the USA decision.

The U.S. withdrawal from the council isn't exactly a surprise.

Under President Barack Obama the United States was elected for a maximum two consecutive terms on the council by the U.N. General Assembly.

Barack Obama chose to have the USA rejoin the new UNHRC shortly after taking office. Members are elected by the U.N. General Assembly for three-year terms and can not serve more than two terms in a row.
