Two die after blast at Zimbabwe presidential rally - state newspaper

Explosion At Zimbabwe Stadium Where President Mnangagwa Addressed Rally

The health minister said some of those wounded had lost limbs and some would require "serious surgery", suggesting the number of injured could rise as the government was still consolidating numbers from the various hospitals. Kembo Mohadi suffered leg injuries, and Constantino Chiwenga had slight facial bruises, state media said.

"As a long standing friend of Zimbabwe, Kenya sends its message of goodwill to President Emerson Mnangagwa and the people of the Republic of Zimbabwe, and urges restraint during the campaign and electioneering period because political competition should not fracture Zimbabweans but should be a measure to deepen their democratic credentials", the President notes.

The blast which went off shortly after President Emmerson Mnangagwa addressed a stadium crowd in Bulawayo has been called an assassination attempt.

Other injured officials include Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, minister of water, environment and climate, and Engelbert Rugeje, party secretary of the ruling ZANU-PF.

He has pledged to hold free and fair elections as he seeks to mend worldwide relations and have sanctions against Zimbabwe dropped.

The president "will not be driven by vengefulness or a spirit of retribution", his spokesman, George Charamba, told the state-run Sunday Mail newspaper.

The President, who also leads the ruling party, Zanu-PF, reportedly described the bombing in Bulawayo as an attempt on his life, and appealed for peace and national unity ahead of elections due to take place on 30 July.

The vote is being held after Robert Mugabe was forced to resign as president following a de facto coup in November.

Chipo Dendere, a Zimbabwean professor of political science at Amherst College in the United States, said the incident would change the tone of the election campaign.

He has pledged to hold free and fair elections as he seeks to mend global relations and have sanctions against Zimbabwe dropped.

Elections in Zimbabwe have been marred in the past by violence and charges of electoral fraud.

Zimbabwe's main opposition leader, Nelson Chamisa, condemned the attack.
