Kane: England captaincy will not change my game

Dele Alli

Tunisia's disciplined defensive formation was gradually worn down by a superior England team and their "optimal striker" Harry Kane, the North African side's coach lamented after his side's 2-1 loss in their opening World Cup game on Monday.

"I think the most is we're proud of each other", Kane said. "In a World Cup you're never sure how it's going to go".

"The performance overrides that and maybe we'll be more settled in the next game".

"So, OK, if we had finished 1-1, there would have been a level of disappointment and I understand results back home would be viewed differently".

Walker's error halted their momentum but by half-time Southgate's men had fired in six shots on target - more than any other side at Russian Federation 2018 and the most of any England team since that triumphant 1966 campaign.

VAR was called upon twice in injury time to look at disciplinary matters. I've always been brought up with England being a core part of what we stood for and my life. So we kept wave after wave of attack.

Federation Internationale de Football Association is assessing the effectiveness of video assistant referees (VAR) at the World Cup after a number of decisions during the first round of group stage matches have left players, managers and fans confused.

Few would disagree that the Three Lions deserved the win against a poor Tunisian side, who only found the net after being handed a debatable penalty when Kyle Walker was adjudged to have fouled Ferjani Sassi. In recent years the first game's always been hard.

British police have visited, too, with UK Gold Commander for Football Policing, Mark Roberts, coming to Russian Federation twice and a delegation observing last summer's Confederations Cup. "They know the way we want to play".

All the momentum of the first half was lost as England's played slowed down and they were unable to carve open space for Kane and his strike partner Raheem Sterling.

Of the goalscorers that day, Steven Gerrard has just moved into management with Rangers and Henrik Larsson can be seen in ITV's studio for this year's tournament, while Joe Cole is out of sight with the North American Soccer League's Tampa Bay Rowdies and Marcus Allback retired in 2013.

"But he felt he could carry on and I thought the runs that he was making and the way he was pressing the ball was still causing a problem".

Dries Mertens joined Marc Wilmots (1998 and 2002) as only the second player to score in two editions of the World Cup, when he hammered home a superb volley two minutes into the second half, sending the ball arcing over Jaime Penedo after Panama struggled to clear a cross.
