Israeli Gunfire, Tear Gas Injure 100 as Gaza Protest Resumes

Israel cancel World Cup warm-up friendly with Argentina citing threats against Lionel Messi

Netanyahu is now visiting Europe and his office could not immediately confirm the reports. His family said he was taking part in a protest in Rafah, in southern Gaza, when he was shot. The photographer's injury was not life-threatening, but he was to undergo surgery.

Shortly after Netanyahu spoke, Israel's military began carrying out strikes in Gaza.

In their defense, Israelis said they were defending the frontier against crowds that threw stones and burned tyres in an attempt to cross.

Freelance journalist Shireen Salloul was hit by a tear gas canister in her left foot while covering protests east of Al-Bureij, according to Ramadan and reports shared on social media.

"Unfortunately, we can not come to Israel in the current situation", Claudio Tapia, the president of the federation, said at a press conference in Barcelona, where the team has been training ahead of the World Cup. International Jerusalem Day also happens to fall this year during the 51st anniversary of the 1967 Middle East war, also known to Palestinians as the Naksa, or "Setback".

The IDF said some protesters used balloons and kites to send explosive devices over the fence, and that the objects exploded in the air. The tunnel in question did not cross the border into Israeli territory, but instead extended dozens of meters underwater into the sea, according to IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus. Of 618 people wounded, 120 were from live fire, they said.

The Israeli army said that it had repelled around 10,000 Palestinians who converged on five points of the border.

"In response, an Israeli aircraft fired a warning shot near the group", it said, without elaborating. Two-thirds of Gaza's 2 million residents are descendants of refugees. Many people were hoping to see Messi, one of the game's stars, in person. "We have small children here who are braver than the Arab governments".

The global community has accused Israel of an excessive use of force during the protests, which left more than 115 Palestinians dead since the end of March.

Phillipa Whitford MP, who has worked as a doctor in Gaza previously, spoke in favour of the resolution stating that Israel's actions in Gaza were "utterly indefensible". Hamas leaders have threatened possible mass border breaches, raising concern in Israel that communities near Gaza might be at risk.

At least one base belonging to Hamas and four for Islamic Jihad, an allied group, were struck, Gazan security sources said. Growing despair in Gaza over blockade-linked hardships, including daily hours-long power cuts and rising poverty, have driven turnout. "If we roll back history and think about suicide bombers in the 1990s and 2000s, about rockets and terror tunnels, these are all weapons that Hamas uses to terrorize and kill Israeli civilians", Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus told The Israel Project.

Al-Quds day was observed throughout the country on Friday. Jerusalem is already historically and religiously divided place, United Nations has never recognized Jerusalem as capital, although United Nations General assembly resolution 194 envisages Jerusalem as global city.

Rotem Kamer, head of the Israel Football Association, said Argentina cancelled the match because of pressure from Palestinians and the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement - which leads a global campaign against Israel, targeting the country's economy, art scene and sports.

The Palestinians have also been outraged by President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and his decision to move the US Embassy to the city.

East Jerusalem houses major shrines revered by Muslims, Christians and Jews. -AFP Palestinians gather to perform the last Friday prayers of Ramazan at the Aqsa mosque compound in the old city of Jerusalem. The compound sits on the ruins of biblical temples and is revered by Jews as the holiest site of their religion.
