In reversal, Trump signs order stopping family separation

Poll: Should DHS separate families crossing the border?

"I'll be signing something in a little while that's going to do that", Trump said Wednesday in reference to family separations at the border.

That means kids are taken and put into the custody of the Border Patrol for up to 72 hours, and then released into the custody of the Office of Refugee Resettlement, a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

As NBC News points out, the order does not include any plans on how the government will reunite children now separated from their families. In the meantime, he said, this is not a matter for the Pentagon to comment on.

It went on, "We support the administration's efforts to enforce our immigration laws, but we can not support implementation of a policy that results in the categorical forced separation of minor children from their parents".

One White House official said Mrs. Trump had been making her opinion known to the president for some time that she felt he needed to do all he could to help families stay together, whether by working with Congress or acting on his own.

"If they want to take a baby from the arms of his mother and separate the two, that's wrong", the cardinal told CNN's Chris Cuomo. She also worries that it's even more hard for families to pursue asylum claims while they are in federal detention.

The president said he is also going to seek authorization to not give USA aid to countries which "abuse us by sending their people up".

"The solution to family separation is not indefinite family detention", the organization said.

Congressional Republicans are racing to find legislative options to stop a White House policy of separating migrant children from their parents at the USA border amid widespread condemnation of the practice.

Trump told Republicans during a closed-door meeting Tuesday night that he would support them "1,000 percent" on immigration but did not specifically back either bill.

A few days ago President Trump was blaming his administration's policy of family separation at the border on the Democrats and saying Congress should act.

Almost all of the families, and many others, have officially requested asylum, citing the incessant violence in their home countries. At United Airlines, CEO Oscar Munoz said that while he had not found any evidence that children separated from their parents had been flown on United aircraft, the company requested that federal officials not do so in the future. Davidson said he quit after he was forced to tell family that they couldn't hug each other goodbye.

Republicans across Capitol Hill are still deeply divided over how to solve the issue of DACA and stop families from being separated when they come to the US. With congressional outcome uncertain - and facing condemnation of the family separations from across the political spectrum - the White House took action.

Tyler Houlton, a DHS spokesman, called the airlines' decision "unfortunate". Nielsen said she had not heard the controversial audio first published by ProPublica that made rounds on Monday, purportedly captured at a immigration detention center last week. Meadows announced the proposal at an informal press conference at the White House on Tuesday following a meeting with Trump. But here's one: It is very hard to demonize immigrants who are still in diapers. Theirs is narrow legislation proposed by Sen.

At an earlier event Tuesday, Trump said he was asking Congress for "the legal authority to detain and promptly remove families together as a unit". McConnell says he is reaching out to Democrats for bipartisan backing.

On Tuesday evening, while Nielsen attempted to have dinner at a Mexican restaurant in Washington, D.C., protestors swarmed her and chanted "Shame!" and "Sanctuary for all!"

In 2015, a federal judge in Los Angeles expanded the terms of the settlement, ruling that it applies to children who are caught with their parents as well as to those who come to the US alone.

- It's unclear what will happen to children already housed in shelters. "Children belong with their families", he said.

At the moment, thousands of migrant children are being held in various federal government facilities, including a "tent city" in stifling heat located in Tornillo, Texas not far from the US-Mexico border.
