Democrats Hope For a 'Blue Wave' Push From 8-State Primary Day

Republicans did manage to get John Cox into the top-two runoff for California governor and said they were excited about candidates who won their primaries in key Senate races.

What's more, Democrats turned out at higher levels than Republicans in every single contest in the state where there was a competitive primary.

"They have enough seats in play and enough quality candidates in those seats to win the majority", said Mr Nathan Gonzales, who handicaps House races for Inside Elections.

Given the state's unique election laws it will take days to sort out its competitive races and determine winners.

Thanks to the state's "jungle primary" system, the top two vote-getters, regardless of party, advance to the general election. In those seven districts, the returns aren't all final yet but show a candidate from each made the top two, which means that there will be no guaranteed victory for either party in any of those seven races. Nationwide, Democrats must clinch at least 23 seats from Republicans to wrest control of the House of Representatives.

Feinstein won her party's nomination for another term, as widely expected.

Much of the day's drama focused on women, who fought to make history in some cases and to avoid disaster in others. Meanwhile, in Alabama, Republican Congresswoman Martha Roby was forced into a runoff to save her seat, after she took political heat for refusing to endorse President Trump when the "Access Hollywood" tape surfaced, saying, "I can not look my children in the eye and justify a vote for a man who promotes and boasts about sexually assaulting women". She will face former Democratic Rep. Bobby Bright in Alabama's conservative 2nd district - where Trump loyalty has been a central issue.

Apart from California, voters also cast ballots Tuesday in Alabama, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota. The candidate receiving the fewest votes after the first round of counting is eliminated and his or her votes are redistributed to the voter's second preference.

Republicans have been in a tailspin for years in California, where a diversifying population has grown increasingly Democratic in its leanings.

President Donald Trump's approval has moved to 44 percent among registered voters, according to a new poll from NBC/WSJ, an improvement from the 39 percent approval he saw in April among all adults. He will face Baron Bruno, a real estate agent without a declared political party, in the general election.

Levin said he was also happy Democrats did not get locked out of other close contests. Then getting the attention of voters is always hard, especially for down-party races.

Democrats had eight candidates on the ballot in the race to unseat Republican Representative Dana Rohrabacher, who has served in Congress since 1989 and was re-elected in 2016 in a southern California district that also chose Democrat Hillary Clinton for president.

Francine Karuntzos, a 57-year-old retiree from Huntington Beach, California, said she has deep concerns about the Republican president - particularly his recent declaration that he could pardon himself. Could party actors - politicians, campaign and governing professionals, activists and donors, formal party organizations, party-aligned interest groups, party-aligned media - figure out which candidates to support, and could they then transmit those preferences to voters and convince them to support the party's decision?

There are now seven Republican lawmakers - from Rep. Jeff Denham in the northern San Joaquin Valley to Rep. Dana Rohrabacher in Southern California - who occupy House seats in districts that Hillary Clinton won in 2016. For the most part, it looks like November will see another conventional midterm election, featuring establishment candidates from both corporate parties.

A key Senate race took shape in the heart of Trump country as well. After these results, Democrats realistically are targeting a half-dozen Republican-held seats in California.
