‘Confused’ Trump can’t decide whether he hates immigration bill

House GOP just dropped a compromise immigration bill – and it funds Trump’s border wall

The other legislation, known as the compromise bill, aims to give recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, an eventual path to citizenship while also giving the President and his supporters $25 billion for border security and his signature wall.

Under President Barack Obama, officials responded to an increase in families from Central America at the border seeking asylum by putting them together in family detention, which ran into legal and logistical problems.

In both cases, Trump said he backed certain policies, only to turn around later and blast the same idea - and those who voted for them - on Twitter. He said "I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained them for the objective of order".

Attorney General Jeff Sessions enacted the zero tolerance policy in May, saying immigrants who enter the country illegally could be separated from their families.

Senator John Cornyn, R-Texas, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, is also working on legislation that would expedite hearings and avoid pulling children away from their parents.

"I hate it", he told The Associated Press. "But the big point is they elected to come illegally into the United States and this is a technique that no one hopes will be used extensively or for very long". "Not on my watch". The administration is looking for ways to unwind DACA while navigating lower-court rulings that keep it in place mainly to increase pressure on Democrats to take that deal, but until then, Trump sees a tough stand on the issue as a net victor for himself. "If we build the wall, if we pass legislation to end the lawlessness, we won't face these awful choices".

Graham said he talked Mondayto about 40 senators, including Democrats, but not Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

Advocates for immigrants said the changes to family detentions were particularly severe.

Under the bill, jurisdictions that decline requests from federal immigration authorities to detain undocumented immigrants in their custody could face lawsuits if an immigrant they release commits murder, rape or sexual abuse of a child.

"While the bill contains some positive provisions, including full funding for the border wall and closing loopholes in current law that sustain illegal border surges, it is still a mass amnesty", said RJ Hauman, of the conservative Federation for American Immigration Reform.

Still, that there is no such law didn't keep Mr. Trump from repeatedly blaming a nonexistent Democratic law Friday morning. "We are now a country that purposefully rips toddlers from the arms of their parents". In the House GOP proposal released Thursday there is a provision ending the policy. Trump is to travel to Capitol Hill Tuesday for a strategy session on upcoming immigration legislation.

In an interview on "Fox & Friends" Friday morning, President Donald Trump announced that he will not sign a moderate immigration bill.

The House is scheduled to vote on the two bills later this week.

"And then we now have a bill that represents a compromise that is going to be brought to the floor so members can actually vote on legislation tackling this issue and this has a chance of going into law", said Ryan. "That might be good enough, even if he doesn't say I will sign it", said Miami Republican Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.

The Rev. Franklin Graham, a longtime Trump ally, called the policy "disgraceful".

Its "solution" to the family separation debacle would be to end court-mandated legal protections for children brought across the border so entire families could be jailed together.

"I want to begin by saying we all share a commitment to fixing this utterly broken immigration system, and we've got to find a way to do this", Ryan, R-Wis., told the National Hispanic Prayer Breakfast in Washington.

Former first lady Laura Bush called the policy "cruel" and "immoral", and said it was "eerily reminiscent" of the US internment of Americans of Japanese descent during World War II.

Democrats have turned up the pressure over the policy, and some Republicans have joined the chorus of criticism. Michigan Republican Rep. Fred Upton called for an immediate end to this "ugly and inhumane practice", adding, "It's never acceptable to use kids as bargaining chips in political process".
