Colombia Dealt Rodriguez Blow Against Senegal

Senegal's players take part in a training session in Kaluga on June 26 ahead of their Russia 2018 World Cup Group H match against Colombia

Japan progressed with two fewer yellow cards than the African side.

Colombia secured their passage to the last 16 of the World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Senegal which simultaneously eliminated the Africans via the fair-play rule.

Both teams were on track to move into the knockout stages with 16 minutes remaining in Thursday's clash at the Samara Arena, due to Japan trailing 1-0 to Poland in Volgograd.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com also reported that Japan lost 1-0 against Poland in the other game.

Colombia will face the runners-up of Group G, either England or Belgium, who face off later on Thursday and whose ranking will also be decided via fair play should they draw.

With its game against Colombia looking destined for a draw and Poland beating Japan, Senegal was set to qualify for the last 16 as Group H victor.

Aliou Cisse's side, denied a first-half penalty when VAR judged that Tottenham's Davinson Sanchez had made a legal lunge on Liverpool's Sadio Mane, had looked set to finish behind Japan, with their opponents facing an early exit.

Despite being second best for much of the first half, the South Americans got to the interval on level terms and that point was suddenly enough to send them through following Jan Bednarek's goal for Poland against Japan.

Colombia eventually took the lead on 75 minutes as defender Yerry Mina bagged his second goal of the campaign with a fine header.

However, after consultation with the Video Assistant Referee, Serbian referee Milorad Mazic overturned his own decision and signaled only a drop ball.

Colombia might control the run of play and create more chances, but Senegal will be risky on the counter-attack.

It was an emphatic reaffirmation of their potential after 10-man Colombia, quarter-finalists in Brazil four years ago, had suffered an upset defeat in their opening game to Japan.
