Subtropical Storm Alberto continues to lumber northward

A Flood Watch continues for all of South Florida through 8 pm Sunday evening and the National Weather Service could extend it into Monday

The storm was about 130 miles west-southwest of Tampa, moving north at 14 mph, the hurricane center said.

The storm continued churning north through the Gulf of Mexico on Sunday and is scheduled to make landfall on the Florida Panhandle early Monday morning, reports CNN. The region could receive more than an inch of rain.

Forecasters said Alberto was just west of Cuba Saturday night and was expected to move north-northwest into the Gulf of Mexico, approaching the northern Gulf coast by Monday. Tropical storm warnings, flood warnings and rip current advisories are in effect throughout the state. Boating conditions will continue to be risky, however. Later, it cancelled storm surge warnings for most of the Florida peninsula, saying the Panhandle remained the focus of concern.

The tropical moisture being pulled northward along with Alberto is forecast to keep things a bit dreary Monday, with rain chances at 70 percent.

Alberto's projected storm track has shifted eastward since Friday, lessening its threat to the active oil production areas in the Gulf of Mexico. Lifeguards posted red flags along the white sands of Pensacola Beach, where swimming and wading are banned due to high surf and unsafe conditions. The Tampa Bay is not longer under a storm surge watch at the moment, but that could, of course, change. Both countries issued tropical storm watches for portions of their coastlines, with rain totals in some isolated areas of up to 25 inches. It had maxium sustained winds of 65 miles per hour early Monday and can create unsafe waves for people not in its path. Due to recent rains, grounds over much of the area are saturated and heavy rain could cause localized flooding issues. Although, the season doesn't technically start until June 1.

Tropical Storm Warnings continue for almost the entire Gulf Coast of Florida, and a Storm Surge Watch continues for coastal regions from the Nature Coast to Pensacola.

The US states of Alabama, Florida and MS have declared an emergency ahead of subtropical storm Alberto expected to make landfall on Monday, authorities said.

Gusty showers began lashing parts of Florida on Sunday, and authorities were warning of the possibility of flash flooding. There's always a low-end risk of severe storms or a quick spin-up tornado on the left (eastern) side of tropical systems, which will be the case for eastern Alabama.

Between Hurricane Harvey in Texas, Irma in the Caribbean and southeastern US and Maria in Puerto Rico, past year was one of the most active hurricane seasons on record, said The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

"A few showers will roll in, impacting Brevard and Osceola counties, and some of that rain could spread further inland", News 6 meteorologist Samara Cokinos said. This is almost 60 miles east and about six hours sooner than the forecast issued by the National Hurricane Center one day ago, but well within the margin for error two days out.
