Russian journalist reportedly killed in Kiev turns up alive

Arkady Babchenko

A Kremlin critic who was reportedly shot and killed in Kiev has suddenly turned up alive at a news conference in Ukraine.

But on Wednesday he showed up alive at a news conference in Ukraine.

Russian journalist Arkady Babchenko attends an interview in Kiev, Ukraine November 14, 2017.

A day earlier it was reported that he had been shot dead at the door of his apartment in Kiev - with numerous commenters in Ukraine blaming Russian Federation for the crime.

The murder will further strain ties between Ukraine and Russian Federation, post-Soviet allies who fell out following the ouster of Ukraine's pro-Kremlin leader in 2014.

Arkady Babchenko was going out to buy bread when he was gunned down on the staircase of his building, Ukrainian politician Anton Gerashchenko said.

Babchenko's wife found her husband covered with blood in their apartment Tuesday night, with the victim said to have died from gunshot wounds to his back.

Babchenko, 41, was one of Russia's best-known war correspondents but had left Russian Federation fearing for his life.

He claimed this Facebook post, in which he described Russia as an "aggressor", led to death threats and abuse from the Russian state, writing in a piece for The Guardian that this forced him to leave "a country I no longer feel safe in".

This past March, Babchenko spoke at "Putincon" in New York City, a conference featuring a number of Putin critics on the eve of the 2018 presidential election in Russian Federation. They said the killing may relate to his work.

In April this year, news website Novy Den said its reporter Maxim Borodin died in hospital after falling from his fifth-floor balcony in Yekaterinburg, east of Russia's Ural mountains.

Babchenko himself apologized for the pain the news of his death had caused, telling those present: "I have been forced to bury my friends and colleagues many times and I know the sickening feeling".

In one, he said he felt no regret about the deaths of Russian army choir members and others from a December 2016 plane crash as they were heading to perform before Russian troops in Syria.

Babchenko embraced a popular Kiev uprising that ousted a Kremlin-backed regime in 2014 and went to cover a conflict between Ukranian troops and pro-Russian insurgents in the east of the former Soviet country following the annexation of Crimea.

In early 2017, after spending years fearing he would be arrested, beaten, or worse, Babchenko left Russian Federation.

Babchenko took part in the war in Chechnya as a soldier.

He relocated to Kiev, where he began working for a Crimean television station and produced coverage critical of Russia's military actions in the region.
