Pakistan always distorts history and doesn't believe in law, says Sushma Swaraj

Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj says India won't be dictated

Responding to a question on how India would respond to possible U.S. sanctions on Iran, after the USA pulled out of the 2015 Iran nuclear accord, Swaraj said India would only abide by sanctions imposed by the United Nations and not those imposed by any other country.

THERE can not be any comprehensive dialogue with Pakistan as talks and terror can not go together, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Monday while addressing a press conference at the completion of four years in power of the Narendra Modi-led Government.

India is already suffering the unintended consequences of President Donald Trump's unilateral withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal - a pullout that has spurred higher oil-import bills, the rupee's weakening against the United States dollar, and increased foreign exchange outflows.

In a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi in February, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani expressed readiness to expand mutual relations in all areas.

Iran has threatened to give petroleum giant Total's stake in the South Pars gas fields to China if the French company could not secure protection from USA nuclear-related sanctions.

Under Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama, India was forced between 2012 and 2015 to significantly slash Iranian oil imports and pay Iran in rupees or initiate barter trade.

The department said the sanctions were implemented "in the wake of recent protests by the Iranian people and the regime's subsequent brutal crackdown". India is looking at developing Iran's Chabahar port as a gateway to enter landlocked Afghanistan and Central Asia bypassing Pakistan. Begging for a waiver is the worst possible choice India can pursue, because it will come with conditions that crimp New Delhi's latitude further.

Iran's top diplomat is in India as part of global consultations aimed at discussing continued mutual cooperation with world countries now that the U.S. has quit a multi-lateral nuclear accord with the Islamic Republic.

Yet Reuters reported on May 30 that India's Reliance Industries, which owns the world's biggest refining complex in the state of Gujarat, has significant exposure to the us financial system and was wary of the USA sanctions. Even if Iran is again kicked off the bank exchange, Iran and India in the past have traded billions in rupees and riyals, which locks them in to buying from each other with the money but is better than foregoing the trade.

But Iranian Oil Minister Bijan Zanganeh said on May 30 that Tehran was hanging its hopes on European nations making good on their pledges to keep the nuclear deal and Iranian business ties alive. Also, India has their own history of conflict and experience with countries that fall under socialist or communist dictators in their part of the world. There are indications that India would continue doing business with Iran unless the sanctions imposed by the USA are endorsed by the United Nations.
