Kanye West criticised for saying 400 years of slavery was a choice

Kanye West is being mocked relentlessly on social media with #IfSlaveryWasAChoice memes after his slavery comments caused immediate uproar

"Like, we're mentally in prison", West said in an interview with TMZ on Tuesday.

The former Black Eyed Peas frontman was one of many celebrities who are voicing their outrage after Kanye said he felt that 400 years of slavery "sound [ed] like 'a choice'".

African-American novelist and essayist Roxane Gay said: "I don't have the energy for nonsense but Kanye saying slavery was a choice reiterates my previous statements about how unsafe his trite, shallow ramblings are. You know like, it's like we're mentally in prison". I like the word "imprisoned" because slavery goes too directly to the idea of blacks ... so prison is something that unites us as one race.

They came during an interview with TMZ, when he turned his attention to the history of black slavery. He was pretty vocal about his opinion on slavery without once thinking of the consequences.

When the Louis Vuitton Don tried to get off the pills when his dealer told him they "kill genius", he landed in the hospital and was eventually prescribed even more medication!

"There is fact and real world, real life effect behind everything that you just said", Lathan told West.

In the video Lathan rebuts, "The rest of us in society have to deal with these threats in our lives".

T.I. also told the radio hosts that during the convo confronted the father of three about why he was wearing the Make America Great Again hat. However, the initial damage caused by his comments had already been done.

Lathan urged the rapper and designer to "be responsible" following his musings which he said were "absent of thought".

Several artists, musicians, and activists took to social media criticizing West's comments.

Later Tuesday, after the Twitterverse caught fire over the comments, Kanye tried to explain the reasoning behind his assertion that 400 years of slavery was a choice.

"I think I need a little bit of a break", he said.

Although Kardashian has been extremely vocal about her husband and his free will, she has not yet commented on his most recent statements during his interview on TMZ Live.

"Of course I know that slaves did not get shackled and put on a boat by free will", he wrote.
