Irish waiting another day for Test debut

People shelter from the rain as groundsmen work on the wet pitch at Malahide cricket club in Dublin as the start of play is delayed on the first day of the Test match between Ireland and Pakistan

The day was wrapped up due to bad light and the green shirts finished on 268 for the loss of six wickets.

But Shadab Khan (52 not out) and Faheem Ashraf (61no) excelled before play stopped again to put a dampener on another soggy day for Ireland.

Ireland enjoyed their inaugural Test by dismissing Pakistan dangerman Asad Shafiq.

Ireland's first day of play in Test cricket started and ended with a bang with a dramatic first delivery opening affairs and a clap of thunder and a flash of lightning ending play at Malahide with Pakistan having firmly taken the upper hand.

They had to bat 280 overs (214 in the first innings) in Harare against India to achieve that and, while Ireland should not have to bat that long if they are to claim what would be a memorable draw, with a good forecast today Boyd Rankin should finally win his second Test cap and 10 other proud players - Craig Young, Stuart Thompson and James Shannon are expected to miss out - will, finally, win their first.

At tea, Tim Murtagh and fellow pacemen Rankin and Stuart Thompson had taken two wickets each.

At lunch, Rankin had impressive figures of one wicket for seven runs in seven overs, with Murtagh - 1-12 in seven - only marginally more expensive.

Imam did not last much longer as he departed the next ball, leaving Ireland jubilant and Pakistan in trouble at 13-2.

Tyrone Kane and Niall O'Brien collide with Imam-ul-Haq.

The 22-year-old was left flat on the ground and needed several minutes' treatment on the field, but he recovered to face the second ball of the match, with Imam playing and missing.

Pakistan gave Test debuts to opening batsman Imam-ul-Haq and medium-pacer Faheem Ashraf.

The left-hander, who came into this match following fifties in Pakistan's two warm-up fixtures, against Kent and Northamptonshire, square-drove Murtagh for a stylish four.

But, in hindsight, given what the forecasts had predicted, both teams, especially Ireland, would be happy with the amount of cricket that eventually took place. The second time was in a 71st over in which Ashraf plundered seamer Boyd Rankin for four boundaries to rush to his maiden half-century in 52 balls.

Barely had the crowd's cheers subsided, then Pakistan were 13 for two off the very next ball.

Pakistan, sent into bat by Ireland captain William Porterfield, lost two wickets in successive balls on a pitch offering some sideways movement.
