Another Democratic Senator Announces Support For CIA Nominee Gina Haspel

Gina Haspel at her confirmation hearing where she refused to denounce torture as immoral

Donnelly joins fellow Democratic Sen.

Gina Haspel, who spent time Wednesday taking questions from Senate Intelligence Committee members during her confirmation hearing, was nominated earlier this year by President Donald Trump to take over as the next leader of the CIA. She faced sharp questioning from Democrats over her role in the agency's use of "enhanced interrogation techniques", commonly referred to as torture, on terrorist suspects.

With Donnelly's support, Senate Republicans, who hold a slim 51-49 majority, have a chance to reach the necessary votes in a floor vote.

Donnelly - who will face a tough re-election bid in November when he faces off against Republican businessman Mike Braun - is one of two Democrats to announce their support for Haspel.

Haspel, now the acting director of the CIA, told members of the Senate intelligence committee during her confirmation hearing on Wednesday that, if confirmed, she would not restart the interrogation program.

In a closed session following Haspel's public testimony, the mood was less tense and more familiar, according to people familiar with the proceedings who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe private discussions.

Brutal interrogation practices are now banned under USA law, but debate on the issue has re-surfaced during Haspel's confirmation process because she was once involved in the CIA's interrogation program.

Donnelly's endorsement comes just days after Haspel's confirmation hearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee, during which she repeatedly refused to say torture is immoral and denied that the CIA has ever even engaged in torture.

Donnelly's support for Haspel comes as he needs to portray himself as someone who doesn't always oppose the president's agenda, and can agree with those on the other side of the aisle.

Haspel is a career CIA officer who has spent much of her time at the agency working under cover. Rand Paul, R-KY., and also Arizona Sen.

A senior Democratic source told Fox News this week that it was unclear if the Senate Democratic leadership would whip against Haspel, and that several Democrats may eventually vote for her. Haspel had previously been serving as deputy director. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) remains on the fence. He says the program was necessary to keep the U.S. safe from attacks and that he doesn't think the techniques used amounted to torture.
